A Medical Assistant can work in a variety of different areas. In a clinic setting you take vitals, room patients, run some lab tests, work very closely with a physician, PA, or NP. In a hospital setting, you may go into patients rooms and preform phlebotomy, specimen processing, front desk, reception, etc. A Medical Transcriptionist transcribes the Dr's notes so they can be added to the chart. Minimal Dr or Pt contact. A Medical Secretary can work with one or more doctors. Usually specialists. Pretty much a regular secretary only with more emphasis on the field your doctors work on.
I'm a Medical Assistant with 25 years experience, mostly in lab. Now I am taking a Medical Transcription course. Needed a change of pace.

I agree with mamashaffer regarding the medical assistant description. However, the medical transcriptionist pretty much, close to 100%, just sits and types the reports that compose the medical record. We type the admitting History & Physical, consults, surgeries, and discharge summaries, known as the Basic 4. At our hospital our department also types up radiology reports, pathology reports, surrogate notes and DNR (do not resuscitate) notes, plus psychiatry reports and cardiology reports. So if you don't want to sit and type for 8 hours, 5 days a week, I would suggest looking into other ways you could utilize your skills. I've been doing this kind of work close to 20 years now, and now am looking for a change. Because after you pretty much learn everything, and the people get promoted who they want promoted, that's all there is to learn. By the way, a medical secretary and transcriptionist traditionally get paid better money and are offered a better benefit package in a hospital rather than in a doctor's office. A corporation can offer that, while a doctor can only offer you what he has.

I have also worked as a Medical Assistant / Phelbotomist and just completed a Medical Transcription program.  I got tired of the in-office junk and wanted a change.  I am also drawn to the being able to work from home vs an office.  My youngest just started 1st grade and I am ready to go back to work, just not the typical 8-5.

Nice to meet all of you
