Stem cell research has recently resurfaced in the news with research that shows ways liver disease could be treated through stem cells, reducing the need for transplants. You can read the full BBC article here.

What are you thoughts? Should we outlaw stem cell research as President Bush suggests? Or should we increase funding, as California has done?

I didn't have a very strong opinion on this until I lived with a guy in college who had been cured of juvenile lukemia through the use of stem cells.  The reality that I never would have met him had he not undergone the procedure made it pretty obviously a positive force in the world to me.

I also thought it was funny that he was originally from Texas, where George W Bush was to eventually become governor.

I am one also who did not really have an opinion until someone close to me was diagnosed will a life threatening disease. My best friend from highschool has Parkinsons, she is 43 yrs old and a mother of 5 children. I have seen her deteriorate slowly from this horrible condition. Her medical costs have sky-rocketed and at times she has a hard time afforded her meds to control the tremors. She was a chosen by her nuerologists for the experimental deep-brain-stimulation surgery, which for all of us was HOPE. Unfortunately, she was one of the few that this procedure did not work. So...to make a long story short  STEM CELLS=NEW HOPE.

I think that stem cell research is something that we should be persuing with more vigor in the United States.  No matter where they come from it is a shame to waste them when they can potentially do so much good.

In addition, we risk falling further behind Europe and other centers of research by burying our heads in the sand and pretending progress isn't being made.  We may find ourselves buying more and more of our cures and medicines from other nations.  We already depend on foreign imports far too much, it would be a shame to lose our edge in healthcare.
