To be Scared or not to be? That is the question. To start this out, I am age 40, going to be 41 in May, Just now figuring out what I want to be when I grow up, and lemme tell you, its frightning. School just scares the pants from me...or should I use a little humor and say Scrubs? *smirks* I know bad joke, but anyhow, Please, Share your experiences with me if you were round about this age or are currently experiencing the same thing, I could use a little reassurance that this is going to be the best days of my life. = )

  To Not Be Scared***

I returned to school after being out for 20 yrs. I always knew I wanted to be in the medical field, so I bit the bullet.  I too had second thoughts (I was too old, was I smart enough, what will the young ones think of this old lady), but you know what it turned out great. I had the disipline to study and the drive to succeed. Now I still attend taking one class per semester to enhance my skills and keep a 3.75 GPA. I know you will be great!!!  Good luck

That is really reassuring!  Thanks for sharing that Cordovapnk.  I am scared too.  I never did very well in school and I think my self-confidence is low.  But...on the other hand, I also think I will be more motivated for health care training than I was for high school world history and algebra.  You are so sweet!

Hi, I returned to school a year ago for practical nursing.  I am 45 years old now. Who would have ever thought that I would be doing this?   I love the medical field.  I have been a medical secretary to home health aide to emergency med tech( this was a fantastic career) to nursing assistant to this now.  I have been a stay at home mom for seven years.  I am looking forward to going to medical school and becoming a Physician Assistant.  I will be almost 50ish when I graduate and take the state board. I am showing myself and my 3 children that they can be and achieve their dreams.  I am happy to be making a positive influence where ever I am.   Again I applaud you and all the others who have made the sacrifices  to make a difference in the health care profession.  So I  say WATCH OUT WORLD  WE ARE COMING!

I am also a non-traditional student. I went to community college for 4 years, then transferred and found out my senior year what I wanted to study and do with my life!(become a medical doctor; so I have another 10 years of school ahead of me; but I have found out that I like being a student and learning and being challenged regularly)

I am married to someone who is also going to university full time and we want to have children and it is hard at times to keep my head and spirit above the stereotypes and negativity. I think it is better late than never, plus you have a more experienced and mature outlook on life and how you make decisions. You can achieve whatever you set your mind to as long as you are motivated and encouraged by your loved ones and close friends. Best of luck and keep us updated with your progress.

I have returned to the college seen several times including recently.  I am able to get top grades and am always respected by instructors and fellow students alike.  School is inevitable make the best of it.  The best thing to do is get into a program that can really pay off like RN or PT.  Ever get those dreams that you are back at college?
