I JUST RECENTLY FINISHED GOING TO SCHOOL FOR CERTIFIED  MEDICAL ASSISTANT, AND  I'VE BEEN  WORKING IN A HOSPITAL A LITTLE OVER A MONTH . ONE OF THE MEDICAL ASSISTANTS WORKING THERE TOLD ME THAT IT WAS'NT NECESSARY FOR ME TO HAVE GONE TO SCHOOL TO BECOME CERTIFIED MEDICAL ASSISTANT.  SHE ALSO SAID THAT WHEN SHE STARTED ,SHE HAD BEEN  WORKING FOR A DOCTORS OFFICE  FOR SOME YEARS AS A MEDICAL ASSISTANT  AND  STILL TRYING TO GET HER GED, WHEN SHE TOOK THE CERTIFICATIONS TO BECOME CERTIFIED. I TRULY PRAISE HER FOR HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND AT BETTERING HERSELF,AND SHE IS A VERY GOOD WORKER . .  I  DIDN'T KNOW  THAT  YOU  DIDN'T  HAVE  TO  HAVE  A  HIGH  SCHOOL  DIPLOMA  OR  GED  TO  BECOME  A  MEDICAL  ASSISTANT  OR  CERTIFIED. I  DID  KNOW  THAT  YOU  DIDN'T  HAVE  TO  BE CERTIFIED  TO WORK  AS A MEDICAL  ASSISTANT  BECAUSE  MOST  OF  OUR  STAFF  ARE EXPERIENCED  BUT  NOT  CERTIFIED AND  THEY  ARE T HE BEST ONES  WE  HAVE!  IS THIS  TRUE  OR  IS  SHE  PULLING MY LEG?  CAN  YOU  BECOME  A MEDICAL ASSISTANT AND GET CERTIFIED  WITHOUT A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA  OR GED?

Jorgia,

It all depends on what type of doctors pratice you work for. First of all, do not take away your accomplishment of becoming "certified" through hardwork and schooling. As far as the GED part, I do not think a business would hire a "dropout" as a Medical Assistant " certified or not. I do not use "dropout" as a bad term, just to describe not completing her highschool education. Second of all, Medical Assisting is one of the few areas you cannot "test out of" to receiving certification. You have to complete a state regulated and recognized program and complete so many hours at an externship to be able to test for certification. As for me, I am a Certified Nurses Assistant, Certified Phlebotomist and am currently (and have for the past three years) working as a Medical Assistant at a Internal Medicine office. I took a chance and applied, letting them know I was not certified, but had other qualifications that seemed to fit with what they were looking for. I have been blessed working for the best two doctors. They have taught me almost all I know about Medical Assisting. So, as far as her "pulling your leg"--some of her story "yes".

I am confused as to weather I should go to school to become a medical assistant.  Since I am unemployed, I will be without income for the whole one year if I choose to go get a certificate and will be taking student loans.   I am older and was wondering if this expense is worth it.   Is it difficult to get a job when you are older?  I am really interested in the field, but am concerned that the schooling will be "above my intelleigence, but also once I have completed school, will I be marketable.  Can someone please give me some guidience?  thank you  P.S.  I have been trying the past 4 months to get into the field thru appling for receptionist jobs at doctor's, hosipitals.

Joyce,

One of the great things about the healthcare field is the amount of flexibility when it comes to going back to school. There are medical assistant programs on campuses and online, full-time, and part-time. If you can't afford to leave your job to go back to school., check out online or part-time degree programs. You can search for Medical Assistant degree programs with our School Finder.

Good luck!

Joym,

I, Myself got back into the medical field when I was 39. I took phlembotomy classes at my local college and gained employement at my externship site. From there, I applied for a MA job at a local doctors office (no schooling) and was hired with CNA and blood drawing skills. I have happily ben there 3yrs now. Good Luck whatever you choose.
