Age and Job Hunting

Posted 4 months ago Even though discrimination is not supposed to enter the working world........ Do you think employers are more likely to hire a younger person with the same credentials as an older person....say someone in there 20's vs,,,someone over 40 years old??? |

Posted 3 months ago Hopefully employers would hire the person that is most qualified for the job under the criteria that they have set regardless of the applicant's age. As an applicant I believe that it is important to focus on the qualities the employers are seeking rather than the ones that the employers perceive as unproductive; thereby, think of a 40+ years old applicant as a more mature, experienced and efficient employee, and not as an older, slower and less modern or "in" than a 20 year old. The people who think it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it. --Chinese proverb

Posted 3 months ago Unfortunately, my father-in-law has been out of a job almost 10 months. He will be 59 in December. He's HIGHLY qualified for almost all jobs that he has applied for, but obviously has not been hired for any of those jobs. I think his age is definitely the reason he is still unemployed.

Posted 3 months ago Mickee004--I am sad to hear of your father in-laws situation. I think society as a whole needs to utilize our work force of older persons. We need to tap into their experience, knowledge and stability. We can only pray for a change :)

Posted 1 day ago MIKEE-004 MAYBE HE IS PERCEIVED AS BEING OVER QUALIFIED! THERE IS A DEFINITE TRUTH IN THIS---PEOPLE ARE EITHER AFRAID YOU MIGHT HURT THEIR JOB, OR THEY WILL HAVE TO PAY YOU MORE THAN THEY WANT, BECAUSE OF HIS QUALIFICATIONS! THIS REALLY STINKS, BUT IS TRUE....MY FEELING IF I WANT JOB BAD ENOUGH AND NEED IT : ABUSE MY KNOWLEDGE!, JUST LET ME WORK, AND YOU'LL SEE I'M WORTH IT. AND BY STARTING LOWER THAN HE IS USED TO, HE WILL PROBABLY SHOW PPL HE IS A GOOD, SMART WORKER, AND WILL MOVE UP IN POSITIONS! HOPE SO, ANYWAY!
