Please share with us the ways you use to save money on buying your groceries: do you buy in bulk? Do you buy frozen or canned foods? Do you barter or exchange with neighboors who have chickens, fruits and veggies??

Well,   I always like to  make a list of everything  needed  before I go grocery shopping and stick to it , if  its not on the list I won't buy it.I also try not to go on an empty stomach, because I always end up over buying especially junk foods. By buying just enough of what's needed I  can save  money because I won't over spend and I won't waste it by over buying .

I agree, Jorgia. I always spend way more than I need to when I shop on an empty stomach (everything looks so good then!). Even though it can be a hassle, it's can also help to look for the best price. I found that if I bought certain things at Trader Joe's and certain things at Safeway, I saved money. That's easy here in SF where you don't have to worry too much about driving, but if you have to drive a considerable distance to visit a number of stores, you probably won't save anything and should stick to one shop.

My way of saving on groceries is to go to stores who are having  ten for ten items sales at one dollar each  and buy in large quantitie and I definitely do not shop on an empty stomach to stay within my budget. Which is not much with the soaring prices of food.

Awesome tips, thanks for sharing. Any creative ideas to add? Do you bake your own bread? Buy wholefoods (whole chicken, vegetables, etc.) and make several dishes with each or cook ahead and freeze?

For the last few months, I have come home and reviewed my grocery receipts...marking those items that are more expensive. I consider if I can get similar nutrition from something cheaper. This has helped cut my grocery expenses down each week...as well as pointing out the items I have picked up that weren't necessities on my list! Some of the items that you THINK are necessary...esp. cleaning supplies, toiletries, paper goods, etc. really add up...but can be substituted. Use washable rags vs. disposable paper towels, you don't really NEED dryer sheets, presoak treatments (I just put a dab of regular detergent on the spot!), I open a window for a few minutes vs. buying room sprays, etc. You begin to realize that so much of what we purchase is not even necessary...it is drilled in our heads by marketing!!!

How about coupons? Wholesale stores? Have you ever thought of going to your local food bank? Also, it's summer time and gardening is wonderful for doing several things at once (produce your own food, meditate/relax, work out, get a tan, teach others--kids--about nature and respecting our environment, etc.) What would you plant/grow in your garden?

Since I live alone, I tend to avoid the wholesale stores, but my boyfriend has started a garden at his house - potatoes, artichokes, garlic....I'm really looking forward to the home-grown food!

Coupons are a good way to save on groceries  ,most of them you can double and save twice as much. Also buying fresh fruit  and then freezing them for later use is another  great way to save,  they make great smoothies when their frozen! My grandmother also likes to     plant  tomatoes, lettuce , herbs, and jalepenos each year so I save a lot of money by not having to buy many of my favorite veggies.

Purchase oranges, onions and potatoes in bags rather than individually.  You'll pay roughly half the price.

Don't buy nongrocery items at the supermart. Health and beauty products are usually cheaper at mass-market retailers like Target.  And you find the best deals on paper products at warehouse clubs.

Opt for frozen seafood over fresh. Vacuum packaged salmon, flounder, and tilapia fillets and bags of frozen shrimp cost 20 to 40 percent less than their counterparts at the fish counter.

Buy ground meat and chicken breasts in bulk or family packages and you'll save big 20% on ground beef and 50% a pound on chicken.
