Hello newcomers,

Having two parents in the professional health-care industry, I wanted to join this community to learn more about other parts of the industry. My mother teaches medical technology and lab scieneces at the University of New Hampshire, and my father is a healthcare consultant working for a small, private office.

What brings everyone else to the site?

I want to be a nurse....my role model, Currin, who is a super nurse, directed me to this site. I'm interested in hearing the good, bad and the ugly about nursing as I try to choose my specialty.

I think the health care industry is at the beginning of a very exciting time where cutting edge medicine, new technology, and a renewed focus on the human aspects of care are creating a perfect storm for interesting changes.

What kind of med tech does your mom teach? Where did she get her degree? Does she like her job? What would she tell someone thinking about getting into the field?

Hi! I am on my way to becoming an osteopathic doctor. It is like being an MD, plus you learn manipulation techniques to help patients recover health with as little drug use as possible. Anyhow, it is still good for me to be on this site for here I can learn about all the other paths to providing care to patients. Eventually, I would like to open a clinic with other providers to better serve patients' needs. I strongly believe in working as a team to bring out the best of each of the members' expertise in the interest of health and well-being.

The people who think it cannot be done should not interrupt those who are doing it. --Chinese proverb

Hi, I am a Certified Professional Coder or also known as a Medical Records Billing and Coding Specialist! I took the teachers class, have worked with ICD-9 codes, CPT codes, Jacho, Medicare and Medicare. Seems to be hard to get in the door of any healthcare company when you have only had schooling. They want 2 years experience in the job field. I have been a Physicians Office Representative I/scheduling secretary handling customer service with patients, and hospital personnel. I have done Insurance verification, patient billing specialist in the past. where I directed the information brought in to the office to the correct place to be taken care of, patient customer service.

Needing any advice or direction on how to obtain a job as a coder. HELP! Please

Have you checked out any of the articles in the careers channel? (Search jobs).

And have you searched jobs and employer reviews as well? Have you looked at Power Secrets - there's both a slideshow/article and a quiz to help you use this site!

I would also suggest starting a group in Groups under Community for Medical Coders. And let me know how all of this goes!

Good luck!

And where are you from? and looking?

Hello Everyone! I have 25 years experience in the Medical Field of Billing, coding and collection. I started off many years ago in the hospital setting as a biller. I had on the job traing in coding. As an A/R specialist coding is important so that errors in coding can be found in order to get top dollar payments from the insurance companies. I am now teaching a Medical Billing Coding and Collection course for First Institute Training and Management. Suggestions for the new coder would be to start in a Physicans office. It is really hard to break into hospitals because they do want alot of experience.

Thanks, but this is a web site for people who are in healthcare. - it's not a site for medical advice. If you are looking for medical advice, try your doctor! Or one of the many ask a doctor web sites.

Hello everyone!
I am also new to this website. I am an RN, in the medical field for over 20 years....emergency nursing my specialty, but also have had some experience in middle management in the hospital arena. I find the site refreshing, and look forward to surfing here when I have internet time. I also have done some travel nursing, and think this is a great way to stay in touch with all those friends around the globe that moblie healthcare workers make, but aren't always able to stay in touch with.

heres a new line... I'm new here! I am currently a wa state licensed pharmacy tech and am working on getting my national certification but unless i find a job that i LOVE then i know this will not be the career i stick with. I love pharmacy but i have this great desire burning from my soul to help people and i want to touch on as many fields as i possibly can meaning i want to take nursing courses, possibly get my emt paramedic license or degree or whatever (thats the rest of my family's specialty, firefighters, emts and paramedics) and who knows what else?! My dream would be to become the seattle seahawks team athletic trainer! i think that would be a blast! I also love to volunteer and just all around love people... always open for a discussion!

Don't short yourself experience on your resume.  Make sure that you include in those two years any jobs that you had relating to it while you were in school, and any jobs that you had prior that you can directly attatch to that type of work.  Resumes get you the interview, the interview is then where the employer can see that you really do have what it takes despite not fitting their so called perfect mould... because there is no such thing as perfect.

If you rule yourself out from the get go, then they aren't going to give you even the slightest look.

For example I had two years of clinicals for my field, and three years of experience in a different patient care field before I began school, and you can bet your life that when I submit my resumes I make sure to put in big bold letters at the top that I have five plus years of patient care under my belt, two of which I consider to be in my current field.

Believe in yourself first, you're the best dang candidate for the job, make them see that.

Hi, my name is Michelle, I sell durable medical equipment, have been in the medical industry for more years than I would like to admit.  My mom was a nurse, so have been in it since, I was little.   I stayed in medical, because I couldn't get out.  However, am glad I couldn't.  Have changed my focus from the beginining.  That's the cool thing about this field, it is always changing and we are always learning.
