I was reading all the bad patient comments, but want to remind everyone that there are so many of the good ones, that offset all the bad ones.  I used to take care of a hospice client, I only knew her for 2 weeks before she passed away, this has been more than 20 years ago. I cannot express what an impact she had on my life.  Just one more comment, I had a bad patient once, who also picked at everything I did,  I would pray on the way to her house for me to hold my control and just grit my teeth, she actually pushed me to the point that I no longer wanted to be in the medical field.  I guess, God had other plans, I did not leave the field, however, I did get a new job.  Of all the patients I had at the the time, when I gave her my notice, the next visit with her, I was given a Thank You card.  She expressed, how she thought I was much too good, to be doing what I was doing, and was so proud of me for bettering myself.  SO, sometimes we get those patients that are kind and wonderful, but along with that we get the ones who push us to new heights and more understanding and empathy.

Great post, michelleph! We do have to remember all those great patients that have changed our lives. I once worked with a young man who was in a horrific car accident. He was in a coma for a number of weeks and wasn't supposed to wake up. By some miracle, he did. He had lost almost 100 pounds and was incredibly weak. At first, he wanted nothing to do with me. He hated getting out of bed because he was so depressed. One day, his attitude changed completely. He decided that there were so many great things in his life that he couldn't miss out on. He determined that he would be out of the hospital in time for his 1 year anniversary with his girlfriend. He worked and worked, and surprised her by coming home (early) on their anniversary. I always think of him and tell his story when I have a client who is depressed or thinks he/she can't do it.
